The Curriculum

An effective business lawyer must understand and anticipate the many legal and financial
ramifications of a client’s venture, ranging across many subject areas. The Center for Business
Law and Regulation offers an interwoven fabric of courses to provide this knowledge in the
areas of corporate, securities, commercial, e-Commerce, bankruptcy, taxation, real estate, and
environmental law, as well as the underlying business and regulatory context.

First-Year Courses
During their first year of study, Contracts, Torts, and Property Law courses provide students with core knowledge that forms the foundation for upper-level courses. During spring semester of their first year, students may take one elective, a first-year perspectives course. These include Dispute Resolution; International Law; Intellectual PropertySurvey; Courts, Public Policy and Social Change; and Perspectives in Law and Biomedicine, all of which explore the legal context in which businesses operate.

Upper-Level Courses
Fundamental business law electives help students build a base for advanced-level courses and prepare for summer employment after the second year:
  • Business Associations
  • Commercial Paper
  • Federal Income Tax
  • Financial Principles for Lawyers
  • Sales and Secured Financing
  • Secured Transactions
